“I need a date idea for Lois and me,” I mused aloud, near the end of our workday.

“Well, do you want to go fancy or more homemade?” Jonathan asked.

“Both, I think. I don’t need one date idea; I need a slew. Because I plan on lots of dating in our future.”

“Ah Norman, hope springs eternal with you, doesn’t it?”

“Hey, after the night and morning we had, you’d be hopeful, too. But I need ideas, man! I don’t know this town well yet, and I don’t want to take her to my place for a movie or to the jam session over and over. I want to vary it up. Show her I can be spontaneous, or at least a tad imaginative when it comes to these things.”

“So, naturally, you’re asking me to figure it out for you?”

I scoffed. “No, I’m asking because you had four more whole extra days here than me, and you have an in with Max. You know Green Valley better.”

“Okay, well there’s the obvious of course; dancing at Genie’s, which we’ve already done as a group, but I think she would enjoy it more with you solo now, a fancy dinner at The Front Porch, and I heard there’s a Christmas market she might like to go to.”

I grabbed my cell out of my back pocket and opened a new note to myself. “Hold up, let me write this gold down. Front Porch—fancy—Genie’s—not so fancy—and a Christmas market—perfect level of schmaltz. Thanks, bro.”

“You’re welcome. Um, does she like horses? Because there’s this place I, uh, know. They do hayrides.”

“That might be better after Elsa is back; she loves horses. We could take her there to feed them apples or something, and then maybe in the summer she’d be interested in going riding, the three of us.”

Jonathan looked at me funny. “You’re already planning for trips or dates or whatever with Elsa, too? That’s serious, Norman. You can’t get a child involved unless you’re, like, super committed to the relationship. They get attached so fast, you know. Have you and Lois even defined what you are yet?”

“No,” I admitted. “And I know you’re right; I have to be careful around her daughter. I don’t want to build up expectations and then have it all taken away if Lois and I don’t work out.”

“That’s assuming Elsa even likes you,” Jonathan said, tossing a balled-up rag at me.

“Hey, what’s not to like?” I replied, grabbing the rag, tightening it up into as solid a projectile as I dare make here in the shop, and threw it at his head. It pinged off the back and landed on the floor. “Woot! Three points right there! You know, Max’s backyard where it touches onto the woods would be a perfect place to play with our nerf gear.”

“I take back that element of doubt I might have planted in your mind: Elsa’s going to love you, because you’re practically a six-year-old yourself.”

“Oh, stuff it, Mr. I-Threw-The-Rag-First!” In typical Jonathan fashion, he ignored me and kept working, whistling a tune I couldn’t place but would drive me crazy until I did.
